WW1 stories brought to life with Projectiondesign

Projection systems specialist, Projectiondesign, has used its expertise to support a new museum dedicated to telling the stories of the First World War (WW1)

The new Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres, Belgium, interprets the stories of WW1 using modern museum techniques and multimedia. In an attempt to make displays as effective as possible, the museum turned to Projectiondesign for help.

The initiative saw the projection expert’s F22, F32 and F35 wqgxa projectors and WM processers provided, as well as Ocular BVBA—all with the aim of stimulating an in-depth look at how museum visitors deal with war and peace.

“To really embrace the whole public with the impact of landscape then I think the best way of doing it is with projection—that is what we’ve done here,” says museum coordinator, Piet Chielens, adding: “People are really thrilled with the experience and that is largely due to the techniques we’ve chosen to present it.”

Visitors are greeted with the ‘Belle Epoque’ exhibit, with two F32 projectors showing footage of pre-war life onto a curved structure. The ‘First Battle’ area features an F35 wqxga projector to show a 3D scale model of the battlefields in the North Sea and other wartime footage.

The ‘Ypres Salient’ exhibit uses three F22 projectors and WB1920 onto 170-degree curved screen to project various footage during the war. The ‘Third Battle’ section uses four F22 projectors onto a curved screen to provide visuals and narration about one of the bloodiest battles of WW1.
